Wheelchair-accessible toilets — What should be standard
Accessibility isn't a favor. It's a right. Here's what should work.
Context
In France, 80% of "wheelchair-accessible" toilets don't meet the NF P 99-611 standard. Broken lock, missing bar, insufficient maneuvering space. This guide is also a collective reporting tool.

Door access
The gesture: Door must open from outside in emergency. Check unlock system if you're alone.
Avoid: Locking with no warning if lock seems fragile. If you jam and no one can open, it's a nightmare.

Transfer
The gesture: Approach from usual transfer side. If bowl isn't clear at 80cm each side, report it. Regulatory failure.
Avoid: Forcing transfer in unfit space. Exit and report rather than hurt yourself.
💡 Tip: NF P 99-611 standard: 90cm min door width, 150cm Ø maneuvering space, foldable bar 30-40cm from floor.

Bar + support
The gesture: Foldable bar transfer side, fixed bar wall side. Use both. They're there for that.
Avoid: Skipping bars "I can do it". Slipping happens fast. Secure.

Alarm button
The gesture: Always mandatory in wheelchair-access. Cord down to floor level. If you fall, can pull it from the ground.
Avoid: Ignoring a cord "tied up high". Regulatory non-compliance — report it.

Flush + sink
The gesture: Sink must be reachable seated (70-85cm height under plane). Tap too high or too far = non-compliance.
Avoid: Twisting yourself. A sink forcing twist is poorly designed, not your fault.

Seat + dignity
The gesture: You lower the seat. Like everyone. The equality gesture.
Avoid: Self-exemption "it's harder for me". If too tiring, report it in the app. But the gesture stays.

Useful reporting
The gesture: If the toilet doesn't meet standards, vote in the app (wheelchair category). Your 30 secs benefit 100 people after you.
Avoid: Silence. The venue doesn't know it's non-compliant until someone says it. You move reality forward.
